ABOUT

Through film and animation, I explore the juxtaposition between control and chance. A combination of raw materials, often found in nature, captured through stop motion animation produces the handmade, surreal atmosphere I envision. Themes of vulnerability, transformation, conception, growth, and the dynamic between chaos and order are present throughout my work. I tend to gravitate towards time-based media projects, involving animation and video. I incorporate various mediums including sculpting, drawing, painting, and carving, in my stop motion practice. I glean the greatest inspiration from the excitement and surprise experienced through chance procedures, while allowing the mediums to guide my process. The satisfaction that comes from seeing the evocative moving images of what I have animated is what motivates me to keep creating, seeing the impossible motion of objects, only viewed through the imagination until brought to life by the process. I am interested in further exploring the ways in which language and societal structures, such as religion, taxonomy, and capitalism, separate us from each other and the world around us, providing us with certain forms of perspective while blinding us to others.

"Jacob seems to find inspiration and purpose at that point when a medium – or combination of media – starts to break down, fall into itself. His videos pit live-action performers against dada art direction and eccentric animated forms; his drawings and installations bring to mind both mythology and urbanism; ritual and trash." ~ Howie Shia, animator
